Abstract:

NOAA Fisheries Service's Northeast Regional Office's Protected Resources Division works to manage, conserve, and rebuild populations of protected species in waters within 200 miles of the shore from Maine to North Carolina. Marine mammals and sea turtles were protected with the passage of two federal acts. The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), passed in 1972, put all marine mammals under the jurisdiction of the federal government. The Endangered Species Act, passed in 1973, mandated protection for species that are considered endangered or threatened in all or some portion of their range. All sea turtles that occur in U.S. waters are listed as either threatened or endangered. Join us to learn more about protected species that occur in waters of the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. The seminar will focus on marine mammals and sea turtles and inform you on what actions to take, or not to take, when encountering a healthy or distressed animal on the beach or in the water.
