Abstract:

A seven month feed study was conducted to evaluate the performance of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss that were fed four different high protein diets. The four feed manufacturers were Bio-Oregon, Zeigler, Melick and Purina. Along with growth, survival, Feed Conversion Rate (FCR) and fish health, feed cost was also evaluated. The Bio-Oregon fed trout had significantly higher growth rates than the other three groups. There were no significant differences between the FCRs of the four diet groups, even though the Bio-Oregon group had the lowest FCR. There were also no differences in survival or fish health between the groups. Trout fed the Bio-Oregon diet were more brightly colored both externally and in the fillets. The bagged feed costs were similar between the four feed manufacturers. However, the cost per pound of fish weight gained was lowest for the Bio-Oregon fed trout.
