Abstract:
The Fisheries Sampling Branch (NOAA/NMFS/NEFSC) manages the Northeast Fishery Observer Program (NEFOP) which collects, processes and manages data and biological samples obtained during commercial fishing trips from Maine to North Carolina. Trained fishery observers collect these data for scientific and fisheries management purposes. Numerous fisheries are covered including, but not limited to, gillnet, trawl, and scallop with trip durations lasting from one to 17 days.
A.I.S., Inc. is contracted by and works closely with the Fisheries Sampling Branch to train, manage and deploy observers onboard commercial fishing vessels. In 2005, a new Fisheries Observer Training Center was established in Falmouth, MA to provide program management, observer training, data editing and data management, all in one location. Observers are hired by A.I.S., Inc, trained and certified by NMFS, and then deployed to their assigned homeports to obtain sea days on commercial fishing vessels.
There are various standard requirements to be an observer candidate including a four-year degree in Marine Biology or Biology. A.I.S. also looks at other attributes to be a successful observer. Individuals with at sea and commercial fishing experience are highly desirable. Familiarity with unique environments, confrontational situations and varied work hours are also sought after qualities. We have found that individuals with these qualifications, in addition to a sense of adventure, a strong work ethic and an ability to be flexible, excel as fisheries observers. |
