12:00 pm – 5:00 pm Field Trip Workshop: Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) Utility – Agency Partnership (advance registration required; $30 fee to attend)
IVM Partners developed a partnership between USF&WS and Baltimore Gas & Electric on transmission rights-of-way beginning in 2009 that led to habitat restoration on over 400 acres of land. Researchers have documented 120 species of birds, 150 species of native bees and 40 species of butterfly using habitat restored by integrated vegetation management best practices. Join this bus tour to Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge, Columbia, MD and South River Greenway to see these habitats firsthand while discussing management practices and results with the experts. Basic concepts in population genetics will be reviewed, focusing on their direct application to fish and wildlife management. Several hands-on activities will be conducted, including case studies incorporating genetic data into management decisions. Through the workshop, participants will have an understanding of both the benefits and limitations of genetic data.
